The Administration department is responsible for providing effective and efficient services to three primary groups: Council, staff and the public. Responsibilities of Administration include overseeing municipal operations, providing proactive corporate communications, and ensuring Council's priorities and strategic directions are achieved. Administration oversees eight municipal departments, employing roughly 60 staff members. These divisions include Administration, Finance, Planning & Development, Rural Services, Transportation & Infrastructure, Utilities, Protective Services, and Disaster & Fire Services.
The Agriculture department works with the public and interjurisdictional partners to coordinate and deliver agricultural services to Lesser Slave River residents while meeting the legislated requirements of the Agricultural Service Board Act, Weed Control Act, Soil Conservation Act, Agricultural Pests Act and Livestock Diseases Act. In addition to controlling weeds and maintaining municipal road allowances and drainage ditches, the Agriculture department provides identification and information services on weed, pest, and insect control and offers an array of programs, information, advice, and education to the agricultural industry and the Agriculture Service Board.
Economic development is a process that leads to sustainable growth and development of a region’s economic base. It involves business development, competitive advantage analysis, and encouraging entrepreneurship in an environmentally responsible manner. Lesser Slave River has immense opportunity to capitalize on established regional oil & gas and forestry industries. These opportunities allow us to work toward a diversified economy, job creation and business investment for the region. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for current and future generations.
The Finance department is responsible for providing financial administration, safeguarding the municipality’s financial assets, and financial planning to ensure the ongoing financial stability and viability of the municipality. It provides financial reporting and control, and is responsible for the implementation of financial management policies. In addition, this department provides corporate services including Accounts Payable & Receivable, Information Systems, Human Resources, Customer Service, and for Accounts Payable & Receivable for the Lesser Slave Regional Waste Management Services Commission.
The Lesser Slave River Regional Fire Service is committed to protecting life, property and the environment from fire, hazardous materials, natural disasters and other emergencies. A department of the Town of Slave Lake, the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service provides full-time, contract operation of the municipality's four fire stations located in Widewater, Smith, Flatbush and Mitsue. Their composite fire services are currently comprised of full-time, casual, and volunteer fire fighters totaling more than 70 members. The department’s response area spans six communities and over ten thousand square kilometers.

However, there is one common denominator; the economic and social impact of wildfire in our region is considerable. FireSmart is an initiative designed to help home and property owners reduce the threat of wildfire within Lesser Slave River’s wildland/urban interface area. The Human Resources department provides a variety of administrative and developmental services to help the MD of Lesser Slave River achieve sustainable staff and service excellence. This department’s role is to assist all departments in creating a safe, healthy and supportive work environment in which all staff are valued, respected, and given the opportunity to achieve their potential through training and development.
The MD’s Protective Services department is committed to enhancing the safety and quality of life of our region through education, inspection, enforcement, community relations and emergency response. This department is comprised of three primary sections: Bylaw Enforcement, Protective Services and Animal Control. Together, they serve the community by providing health and safety; animal control; enforcement of provincial statutes and municipal bylaws; emergency management; education and prevention; and support for local RCMP and other government agencies.
The Planning & Development department coordinates and manages orderly land development in the MD of Lesser Slave River that both protects the interests of the community and complies with the Municipal Government Act (MGA) of Alberta. This department examines issues of compatibility, environment, health, aesthetics, equity, and efficiency in land use planning and development. It ensures the ongoing conservation of the region’s natural environment and cultural heritage while promoting healthy, sustainable communities.
The MD of Lesser Slave River's Public Works department develops and maintains reliable infrastructure that enhances safety, public health and environmental quality of life for the ongoing benefit of our residents. A highly motivated and knowledgeable team, this department strives to provide high-quality, cost effective services in three primary areas: Transportation, Utilities, and Building Maintenance.
The Water & Utilities section provides reliable, quality water and wastewater systems. This section ensures that all utilities infrastructure meets current standards and practices, operates all systems according to all applicable codes, and responds to emergencies and customer concerns.
