Volunteer firefighting can be an extremely rewarding and valuable way to serve your community. However, it is a decision that should not be taken lightly. It takes considerable dedication, a serious ongoing commitment to mental and physical fitness, and many hours of training.

Volunteer Firefighters enhance Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service by helping to provide quick response to emergencies, fire safety education, and support of the fire departments’ other activities.

Basic Requirements

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Criminal records check including vulnerable sectors check
  • Driver’s abstract
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to pass the LSRFS Physical Agility Testing
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR (asset)
  • Previous firefighting experience (asset)

Our Expectations:

  • Be a role model within the community

  • Work as part of an effective team in training and emergency response
  • Rescue and evacuate members of the public from hazardous environments
  • Pre-hospital care response to a broad range of emergency incidents
  • Learn the trades of a Firefighter including:
  • Fire Science
  • Fire Suppression
  • Vehicle Extrication
  • Engine Driver/Operator
  • HAZMAT Operations
  • Technical Rescue
  • Water Rescue
  • Command Strategy and Tactics
  • Incident Command
  • Fire Prevention
  • Fire Code Inspection
  • Fire Origin and Cause Investigation
  • Instructional Techniques
  • Public Education

Estimated Time Commitment:

  • Station 1 – Headquarters (Slave Lake) six hours per week (3 hours for scheduled training / 3 hours for response to emergency calls)
  • Station 2 (Widewater) three to four hours per week (2-3 hours for scheduled training / 1 hour for response to emergency calls)
  • Station 3 (Smith) three to four hours per week (2-3 hours for scheduled training / 1 hour for response to emergency calls)
  • Station 4 (Flatbush) three to four hours per week (2-3 hours for scheduled training / 1 hour for response to emergency calls)
